Denver – Building Denver Bus Transit (BRT) is removing Avenue Avenue Colfax. It is annoying for iconic road bars, which say traffic and lack of parking are removing customers.
“We’ve probably seen about, exactly about a 20% drop in revenue,” said Sudhir Kudva, owner of Squire Lounge.
“I think many businesses are starting to be scared now,” added Alex Barakos, Pete’s Satire Lounge & Pete Kitchen manager.
Barakos is also president of the Board of Directors of the Colfax Business Improvement District. He works with businesses along the corridor to identify the “pain points” during construction, which he says “tends to be everywhere now”.
“If things don’t improve, or we don’t get any kind of help or relief from the city, you will start to see some close businesses,” he said.
Denver Mike Johnston has an unconventional idea to help them.
“I will start an invited residential program in Colfax for anyone who will have me,” he told City Podcast’s Podcast House Paul Karolyi and Bree Davies last week. “I will come once a month, make events in restaurants or bars in Colfax and just encourage our neighbors to come.”
In Podcast, Johnston encouraged people to support businesses in Colfax during construction, rather than separating them.
When asked about the specifics about the guest bartender plans, Johnston’s office told Denver7 on Friday, “More details to come.”
The buzzing from the colfax rods are mixed.
“If you put people into these fights that are fighting, I think this is a great idea,” Barakos said. “He really can’t run. He’s making your drinks. I think everyone would appear and at least see what it’s about all the craving, at least.”
Kudva said he was “60/40” relying on the hypothetical of guests Johnston barted in Squire Lounge.
“I would like to make sure that he is not beet when he is there,” he told Denver7. “It’s a mixed bag … I’m a big fan of Mayor Johnston, but I don’t know if some people think it’s a little theatrical to enter and do so. In fact it won’t help me.”
Barakos and Kudva both say there are better ways to Johnston and the city to help them. Barakos suggested a tax reduction plan.
“So if the Denver’s sales tax is 4%, telling these businesses that are really fighting now,” Hey, you can keep it 4%, but still upload your customers, “this would be great for improving the flow of money in many kinds of businesses down now,” he explained.
Kudva also suggested a possible business interruption.
“This is things that will actually help us, rather than a place of guests,” he said.
Both Barakos and Kudva mentioned Grants of Denver Business Impact Opportunities (BIO) currently available for businesses in segment 1 of BR Construction. Despite the closures of the construction lane already touched by bars, they are located within segment 2 and are not yet eligible for grants, which pay up to $ 15,000 for influential businesses.
“Everyday helps, but $ 15,000, as I said before, will not do or disrupt any business over two years,” Kudva said.
“I really don’t think it’s enough anyway,” Barakos added.
Both men say they are pro-transit and excited to see the finished BRT project, but are worried about the loss of businesses before. But with the planned construction to last beyond this year, they are open to everything that can stop the closures.
“I know it can be difficult to get into these businesses, and it may take a little more time to find parking on a side road or find the right turn to reach a particular place,” Barakos said. “Please come to support these businesses. Everyone is hurting. “
Kudva emphasized that the larger chains are best equipped to survive in long periods of reduced income.
“I don’t think anyone wants to see an Applebee and Chili bunch, and no one wants to see Colfax become a 16th street center,” he said. “I think they want to see Colfax keep his local character, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
